What does Oculus Innovative Sciences do? We have developed, and manufacture and market, a family of products with developmental formulations intended to help prevent and treat infections in chronic and acute wounds. Infection is a serious potential complication in both chronic and acute wounds, and controlling infection is a critical step in wound healing. Our flag ship product, Microcyn, is a non-toxic, electrically charged, or oxychlorine, water-based solution that is designed to treat a wide range of organisms that cause disease, or pathogens, including viruses, fungi, spores and antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, or VRE, in solution. Microcyn has received CE Mark, or European Union certification, for wound cleaning and reduction of microbial load, three U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, 510(k) clearances as a medical device in wound cleaning, or debridement, lubricating, moistening and dressing. Microcyn has also been granted approvals for use as an antiseptic, disinfectant and sterilant in Mexico and approval for use in cleaning and debriding in wound management in India. We do not have the necessary regulatory approvals to market Microcyn in the United States as a drug, nor do we have regulatory clearance or approval to market Microcyn in the U.S. as a medical device for a wound healing indication.
Who are Oculus Innovative Science customers? This depends in large part on which part of the world you're in. In the United States, it is currently a mix of podiatrists, wound care doctors/nurses, and individuals who are using Microcyn Wound Care for moistening absorbent wound dressings and for debriding and cleaning acute and chronic dermal lesions, such as stage I-IV pressure ulcers, stasis ulcers, diabetic ulcers, burns, abrasions and minor irritations of the skin. Secondarily, U.S. veterinarians, horse trainers/owners and companion pet owners use the Vetericyn Wound Spray for Animals (formulated with Microcyn) to help debride, rinse, and eliminate odors in a wide variety of wounds, ulcers and abrasions. In the European Union, Microcyn Wound Care is intended for use by podiatrists, wound care doctors/nurses and individuals for use in the debridement, irrigation and moistening of acute and chronic wounds, ulcers, cuts, abrasions and burns.
In Mexico, Microcyn60 (formulated with Microcyn) has been approved by the Mexican Ministry of Health as a disinfectant, antiseptic and sterilant for use by surgeons, doctors, podiatrists and patients for the treatment of complex wounds, such as burns and diabetic foot ulcers.
Other customers include partners or licensees who may come under agreement to package and market Microcyn Technology via private label such is the case in India, where Alkem Laboratories is distributing a wound care product under the brand name of Oxum.
